liberally speaking

I'm liberal.

But not in the way that you're thinking. I'm conservative in values and in political practice, but at heart I am liberal. And by liberal I mean a product of a liberal arts degree. I was recently told that I was a walking volume of useless knowledge, but I beg to differ on the use of the word "useless." True, my wealth of information on WWI and WWII Europe may serve zero purpose in the work place other than for fun fact time. The fact that I can walk past a piece of modern art and comment on its structure and its relation to nihilism or existentialism also may be seen more as a pretentious burst of hot air than interesting. But the fact is, I love my education. I love that I can speak another language, I love that I can paint, I love that I can watch a movie and fully grasp the historical and cultural references to which they allude.

Sure, having a liberal arts degree made it significantly more difficult to obtain a job right out of college, but the random path I took to get to where I am now was the most wonderful year of my life.

So yeah, I'm liberal all right.
